Male infertility

Is infertility only a women’s issue? No! Not at all! Out of 10 cases we get for fertility, 3-4 are concerned with male infertility. A recent research states that sperm count in men has decreased about 50 percent in the past few years. The reasons for low sperm count are unknown. However, it can be linked to poor lifestyle. Increased smoking, use of alcohol or illicit drugs lead to infertility. Bike shorts or using laptops or even chemical exposures may make men infertile. When the testicles are at a temperature, i.e., a few degrees below the normal body temperature, they produce the best sperms. Hot environments such as working with laptop on your lap or raking sauna or hot bath frequently results in abnormal sperm production and quality.

The problem is men don’t talk about it. But why?  Is it because they feel ashamed about it? Nevertheless, there is nothing to feel bad as it is very common these days. One of my known doctors believes that there is a connection between infertility and virility in Australia.

Men should treat their infertility as a normal medical condition and not look at it as a taboo. It is a condition that needs diagnosis and treatment.

What are the causes of male infertility?

The prime cause of male infertility is unhealthy habits. Smoking is one of the main contributors to worst sperm production, its shape and ability to move. Being overweight or intake of drugs, alcohol and steroids are other causes of male infertility.

However, men produce sperm every 72 days. Hence, if you do positive lifestyle changes, it could affect your sperm production and quality.

Does age affect male fertility?

People tell women to conceive at the right age (when they are younger) as age brings fertility issues. However, the age doesn’t have any effect on the quality of sperm. Nonetheless, there is a connection between ageing male population and risk of diseases like schizophrenia, autism, etc. Men over 45 years of age have issues with the volume of sperm and sperm motility. There is also a risk of potential break of the sperm as you age.

Does taking steroids affect male fertility?

Yes, definitely, taking steroids or drugs make men infertile. Men can develop a condition called azoospermic where there testicles do not produce any sperm. If you stop taking steroids or drugs, it might not improve the sperm quality or quantity.
